Healthy skin starts on the inside. If you want healthy skin then you have to do the things that promote healthy skin cells. It all starts with cellular health. Not just in the skin but throughout the body. Your skin cannot be healthier than the rest of your body.

In this interview Karen Hecht discusses AstaReal® Astaxanthin and it’s benefits for skin health. This is a case where the benefits are real and have been shown in scientific, clinical studies. It is important when you choose a supplement that you get the product that has been shown scientifically to have these benefits. You simply cannot and should not assume that all astaxanthin is the same as AstaReal® Astaxanthin. Look for the AstaReal® logo on products.

Karen discusses the various benefits of AstaReal® Astaxanthin and the doses that were used in the clinical studies. These studies have been done with dosages of 2 mg to 12 mg. per day. The most common recommended dosage is 4 to 6 mg. per day.

Clinical studies have shown improvements in skin moisture and elasticity at 4mg/day astaxanthin after 6 weeks. A comparative study showed astaxanthin protects again UV damage significantly better than other antioxidants like beta-carotene and canthaxanthin.

Skin is our largest organ and our first line of defense against environmental exposures like damaging UV rays, pollutants and microbes. It’s a tough job that can leave skin feeling dry and showing fine lines. Topical applications, like serums and creams, reach the surface of the skin but can’t get down into the deeper layers that contribute to skin’s elasticity and nourishment. Taking astaxanthin orally promotes healthy skin from the inside out. Astaxanthin improves circulation and supply of nutrients to the deepest layer of skin (the hypodermis), protects collagen integrity in the next layer (the dermis), neutralizes UV-induced free radicals causing skin damage at the surface layer (the epidermis), and prevents roughness by improving moisture retention at the outermost layer (the stratum corneum).
